Space

We had a nice unit on the space that wasn't really planned, but Tater Tot was asking a lot of questions about the stars and moon one evening on the way home from gymnastics and it prompted us to delve into the subject further as part of her studies.  She amazed me during this unit with how well seemingly abstract ideas and "big" concepts stuck with her, such what criteria Pluto does not meet that excludes it from being named a planet.  This was before I really thought to document with pictures and a blog, so I don't have as much to show of what all we did, but here's what I dug up:

The solar system

Demonstration of the Earth and moon rotations

Building hers rockets and runways

Tater Tot's glitter galaxy

Lunar Eclipse worksheet

She did an acrostic poem using the word "moon"

Some of her vocabulary words

Science journal entries

We also had the opportunity to go on a homeschool co-op field trip to Living Waters Retreat in Wisconsin, where they hosted a nighttime star-gazing event.  Tater Tot really enjoyed looking through the telescope and binoculars and labeling some of the constellations.

We wound up covering the solar system in general, Earth's changing seasons, the moon, Neil Armstrong, the Space Race, rockets, and constellations.

In addition to the things above, we looked through numerous books on space, letting the amazing pictures we found speak for themselves in many cases.  I was happy to realize that we already owned A LOT of books on space.
